Building Mycology

Built Environments is a nationally-recognized leader in the field of Building Mycology - the study of fungi or 'mold' in buildings. Building mycology is dedicated to structural, environmental, and medical problems caused by indoor fungi. This emerging field extends well beyond mold inspection and involves advanced expertise in building physics, hygrothermal and biological modeling, environmental mycology, microbial ecology, wood decomposition, biodeterioration, medical mycology, and risk assessment.

Built Environments is actively engaged in mycological research, consulting, and expert testimony. Recent projects have included wood degradation rates, biological modeling of transient mold growth, incipient rot, the characterization of fungal biofilms on new construction materials, and the use of fungi as early indicators of moisture degradation.
